MESSAGE

A fragment from the 2021 Annual report. Gold exports are of great importance to Suriname’s economy and currency transactions. Gold is currently Suriname’s primary export product, with the contribution of the local gold exporters, including Amazone Gold N.V., amounting to more than 50% of the total gold export. Regulations for the sustainable preservation of this sector are therefore also crucial. The above core conditions are prescribed by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Responsible Gold Guidance whose guidelines are based on the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Due Diligence Guidance, the Swiss, the US KYC and the Anti-Money Laundering and Combating Terrorist Financing Regulation. As a result of these guidelines, Amazone Gold N.V. has taken constructive steps in the past two years, following LBMA, OECD and AML Compliance towards transparency. However, a proper level of Compliance at the national level is even more crucial, as this is the main way to guarantee the continuity of stable international commitments. It is therefore particularly important that Suriname, in addition to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), also becomes part of these international forums; primarily to regulate and protect its natural resource gold. This will then have an effect in the form of a stable foundation for all stakeholders and for the State. Moreover, the non-joining of Suriname to appointed international forums and thus not meeting the international conditions set by them is associated with the risk of an international ban on purchases of Surinamese gold, a ban that will result in a loss of roughly 50%. of the gold exports which will be disastrous for the economy of Suriname.
Conrad Issa, CEO Amazone Gold N.V.
A very decisive instrument in achieving transparency in the national gold supply chain is a solid national mining administration. Examples include the concept of zoning, which will ensure better registration and thus a clear determination of the origin of the gold, thus creating the necessary transparency in the national supply chain of gold. In addition, proper implementation and proper monitoring of this will make a direct contribution to eliminating the negative environmental aspects related to the small-scale gold sector, namely the use of mercury. The challenges are there, but the solutions are also there and from that point of view Amazone Gold N.V. continues to be motivated. Within the internal structures, but also on the national platform, Amazone Gold N.V. will continue to strive to achieve and maintain a solid Compliance level in order to properly strengthen its relationships both at home and abroad.
